Research Opportunities / Design Experience

The School of Engineering is committed to fostering innovation with a strong research culture. Engineering students are engaged in research and design projects since their undergraduate study. Students have the choice of conducting research / design projects locally or internationally.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is one of HKUST’s signature programs designed to provide a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to engage in academic research and help them develop a broad and insightful perspective of their areas of interest. It was first launched in 2005 and was offered every summer for students to immerse themselves in various tailor-made research projects.

International Summer Research Sponsorship Program

This sponsorship is designated to provide engineering undergraduates the opportunity to conduct research projects in the overseas institutions, while getting a taste of cultural exposure.

Harvard-HKUST Summer International Engineering Design Experience

HKUST students team up with Harvard students to work on a design topic on both HKUST and Harvard campus. This program enables them to gain invaluable cultural exposure and interact with people with diverse backgrounds. With the Final Year Project (FYP) supervisor’s consent, the project work may lead to students’ FYP to be undertaken in their final year. Relevant coaching and supervision are provided.
