Even the most impeccable of ideas can be rendered ineffective if they are not well executed, and more often than not, the functionality of products hinges on the characteristics and quality of the very materials from which they are made.
Engineers are constantly striving to create enhanced versions of existing materials that will embody the desired permeability, conductivity or malleability, as well as characteristics such as being more lightweight, space-saving, durable, adaptive, secure and environmentally-friendly. Such advances are expected to help us achieve various objectives with greater precision and effectiveness, ideally using just a fraction of the cost, time or even labor required by previous or existing technologies.
Being the gateway to an array of leading-edge technologies, engineering can propel the continuous advancement of materials, which will potentially aid the execution of extensive applications, including those we once believed to be unattainable.
Among the latest generation of advanced materials, those bearing the suffixes “nano”, “bio”, “micro” and “smart” are the key players. Here at SENG, there has been ongoing research to further develop nanomaterials such as nano-optics, advanced nano-composites, nanoelectronic designs and even nano-smart materials, and also micromaterials such as microcavity optics. Our research also explores the field of biomaterials to refine wearable or implantable electronics, seeking to benefit modern medical procedures and beyond.
Our study of advanced materials also covers prominent fields including quantum and silicon photonics, fuel cells and batteries, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and even aircraft aerodynamics. All these further attest to the widespread footprint of engineering when it comes to the creation, application and integration of advanced materials in different aspects of modern life.
