Description
The program is designed for those who wish to obtain broad-based and leading-edge skills in Information Technology and provides students with a strong theoretical foundation in all areas of IT. The courses give students insight into the application areas of all the subject materials that they study. The dual emphasis on a strong theoretical foundation and practical application, combined with extensive skill-set training, gives our students a broad array of expertise to draw on, enabling them to meet both the present and future needs of the IT industry.
Content

Curriculum

Students are required to complete a total of 30 credits of coursework.  Subject to approval, students may take a maximum of 3 credits of courses from the Master of Science in Big Data Technology. All the courses are normally held on weekday evenings as well as Saturday mornings or afternoons at HKUST campus. For details, please refer to the Postgraduate Program Catalog and Course Catalog.

With effect from the 2024/25 academic year, a new Cybersecurity concentration will be available in the MSc(IT) program. For more details, please visit the concentration page.

Admission and English Proficiency Requirements

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science, or a related field from a recognized university or tertiary institution. For English Proficiency Requirements, please refer to HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School.

Program Fee

The nominal program fee for 2025/26 Fall intake for full-time study is HK$270,000 (paid in 2 installments) and part-time study is HK$230,000 (paid in 4 installments) respectively.

HKUSTx's Big Data Technology MicroMasters® Program

With effect from 2023/24 academic year, applicants who have met the program admission requirements and with a certificate of MicroMasters Program in Big Data Technology from HKUST and edX would be eligible to apply for:

  • credit transfer of 9 credits; and
  • tuition fee reduction of HK$13,000

Details of the MicroMasters program are available here. When submitting online application for MSc IT program, please also upload the MicroMasters Program Certificate and send an email notification to mscit@ust.hk as well. Please ensure that the full name in English on the MicroMasters Program Certificate matches the name on your HKID/ passport. For those who have accepted the program's offer, students would be required to complete the MicroMasters Program before July 28, 2025 and submit the Qualtrics application before Aug 15, 2025 to seek for approval for credit transfer and arrange the deduction of tuition fee in the second term. Note that completion of individual course separately cannot apply for credit transfer.

Career Prospect

Graduates of this program have gone on to find jobs in technology and financial companies as Program Analysts, Business Analysts, Cloud Architects, Cyber Security Analysts, Data Analysts, Data Engineers, Database Administrators, IT consultants, IT Specialists, Information Systems Managers, Machine Learning Engineers, System Engineers, and others.

Many found such jobs in their home countries, while others stayed in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, some have decided to pursue further study, and enrolled in MPhil and PhD programs at HKUST or other universities around the world.
