The HKUST Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Team clinched the Marketing Display Award in the Explorer Class (university level) of the MATE International ROV Competition 2024, which took place from June 20 to 22 in Kingsport, Tennessee in the United States. It is the second time that the team received the Marketing Display Award in this international competition.

Thirty regional winning teams from various countries and regions advanced to the MATE International ROV Competition this year. These included teams from Canada, Egypt, Hong Kong, Italy, Macau, Mainland China, Mexico, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

After securing their 12th consecutive championship in the Hong Kong regional contest in April, the HKUST ROV Team proudly represented Hong Kong in the final. The team, participating in the MATE International ROV Competition, is composed of 25 members who are primarily in their first and second years of undergraduate studies. The team boasts a rich diversity, with members hailing from five different regions worldwide and studying a wide range of disciplines.

In this competition, marketing display is one of the crucial components. It is assessed and scored by a distinct group of working professionals who represent various sectors such as science, business, government, industry, and education/outreach. Each team is required to present technical information in a manner that is both appealing and comprehensible to both technical and non-technical audiences. This year, the HKUST ROV Team achieved an impressive score of 54.5 out of a maximum of 50 (with 4.5 bonus points).

The ROV Team is one of the four sub-teams of the HKUST Robotics Team, together with the Robocon sub-team, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle sub-team and Intelligent Racing sub-team. The Robotics Team encouraged students to take part in various external robotics competitions and they have made an impressive track record over the years.
