Hong Kong Center for Construction Robotics and Housing Bureau Signed MoU on Innovative Construction Technologies

The Hong Kong Center for Construction Robotics (HKCRC) and the Housing Bureau (HB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 16, 2024 for the establishment of a strategic partnership, with a view to jointly foster the upgrading and transformation of the construction industry, and provide solutions to address challenges including large-scale housing production, the shortage of the construction labor force, continuous enhancement of site safety, etc.

HKCRC was established by HKUST in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley in 2020 under the Hong Kong government’s InnoHK initiative. The center is Led by Prof. LI Zexiang, Colin Lam Ko Yin Professor of Engineering and Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering. It is committed to bringing advanced technologies such as robotics, automation, and AI into the construction industry, developing highly applicable innovative products, and promoting the transformation and upgrading of the traditional construction industry.

Witnessed by the Secretary for Housing, Ms. Winnie HO, the Acting Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Ms. Lillian CHEONG, and the Chairman of the Board of the HKCRC and HKUST Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Knowledge Transfer), Dr. Shin Cheul KIM; the Associate Director of the HKCRC, Dr. LIANG Haobo, and the Permanent Secretary for Housing/Director of Housing, Miss Rosanna LAW, signed the MoU.

The three main directions of this collaboration are smart tower cranes, smart construction sites, and smart estates.

At the ceremony, Dr. Kim said HKCRC was honored to have the opportunity to collaborate with the Housing Bureau and confident to fully transfer and apply the technological research outcomes in the field of construction. The center sincerely hoped to witness the emergence of groundbreaking companies like DJI in the realm of intelligent construction.
