Prof. SHEN Shaojie’s Research Team Won IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters Best Paper Award
A research paper authored by Prof. SHEN Shaojie of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and his team members was recognized with an IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L) Best Paper Award 2023.
Their paper was selected by the RA-L editorial board from more than 1,200 papers published in RA-L in 2023 as one of the only five winners of the award.
Titled “H2-Mapping: Real-Time Dense Mapping Using Hierarchical Hybrid Representation”, the paper was co-authored by Prof. Shen and his current PhD students JIANG Chenxing (first author), LIU Peize and YU Zehuan, as well as his former PhD student Dr. ZHOU Boyu (now Assistant Professor at Sun Yat-sen University [SYSU]) and other SYSU collaborators.
The paper, published in October 2023, presents a real-time dense mapping framework for robotics based on Neural Radiance Field (NeRF), named H2-Mapping. It employs hierarchical hybrid representation for scene modeling and coverage-maximizing strategy for keyframes selection, significantly enhancing mapping accuracy and real-time efficiency on edge devices.
The award was presented at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) 2024, which took place in Yokohama, Japan on May 13-17, 2024.
Other than this award, Prof. Shen and some of his team members also received the IEEE Transactions on Robotics King-Sun Fu Memorial Best Paper Award on the same occasion.
