Prof. Ross MURCH Won 2026 IEEE Communications Society Heinrich Hertz Award

Prof. Ross MURCH, Chair Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE), and his collaborators were honored with the 2026 IEEE Communications Society Heinrich Hertz Award for Best Communications Letter.

The award is given to an outstanding manuscript published in any letter journal financially sponsored or co-sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society during the previous three calendar years which opens new lines of research, envisions bold approaches to communication, formulates new problems to solve, and essentially enlarges the field of communications engineering. Judging is based on quality, exposition, novelty, and impact.

The award-winning paper, titled “Channel Estimation for FAS-Assisted Multiuser mmWave Systems”, was published in IEEE Communications Letters in March 2024. The work was co-authored with collaborators from University College London (UK), Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany), Xidian University (China), Yonsei University (South Korea), Southeast University (China) and Kuang-Chi Science Ltd (HKSAR). Among the co-authors is Prof. WONG Kai-Kit, an alumnus of the ECE Department at HKUST who is now a professor at University College London.

The award will be presented at the IEEE Global Communications Conference (IEEE GLOBECOM), to be held in Macau, China on December 7-11, 2026.
