Prof. TAN Ping Appointed Executive Director for Industry Engagement and Executive Education

The School of Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. TAN Ping, Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, as the Executive Director for Industry Engagement and Executive Education, with retroactive effect from May 1, 2026.

In this new role, Prof. Tan will spearhead efforts to build strong partnerships with industry leaders and enhance the School’s executive education programs to meet industry needs.

Prof. Tan received his PhD in Computer Science from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2007 and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003 and 2000, respectively.

Before joining HKUST in 2023, he served as the Director of the XR Lab at Alibaba DAMO Academy from (2019-2022), Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University in Canada (2014-2019), and Assistant and later Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore (2007-2014).

He specializes in computer vision, computer graphics, and robotics, with a research focus on 3D vision. Currently, he also serves as the Director of HKUST-BYD Embodied AI Joint Laboratory, Associate Director of Cheng Kar-Shun Robotics Institute, and Associate Director of Von Neumann Institute.
