IEDA Department Co-Organized International Mathematical Modeling Challenge International Summit cum Awards Ceremony
The 11th Annual International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IMMC) International Summit cum Awards Ceremony was held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on July 24, 2025, drawing global experts to share their insights on various topics to promote local and international exchanges in mathematics education.
The event was co-organized by HKUST’s Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics (IEDA), the Education Bureau, the NeoUnion ESC Organization, the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong.
The Secretary for Education, Dr. CHOI Yuk-Lin, officiated at the ceremony and presented awards to the winning students. Prof. ZHANG Jiheng, Head of the IEDA Department, gave opening remarks at the ceremony. Other representatives from HKUST include Prof. WANG Yang, Chair Professor of Mathematics and IEDA, and Prof. QI Jin, Associate Professor of IEDA.
The IMMC is an international mathematical modeling competition for secondary students worldwide, aiming at encouraging participants to apply mathematical modeling to explore and solve major problems in the real world, thereby popularizing mathematical modeling education and enhancing the mathematical literacy and technological innovation capabilities of secondary students.
Hong Kong students performed well in the IMMC 2025 in Greater China Region. Sixteen students from four secondary schools obtained an Outstanding Award for IMMC 2025 of Greater China.
At the International Summit, international experts in mathematical modeling education shared their views on topics including challenges in mathematical modeling education, development of mathematical modeling in Hong Kong, applications of mathematical modeling, and the role of teachers in mathematical modeling education.
