A cross-School team comprising Electronic and Computer Engineering undergraduate student LIU Yifan (School of Engineering) and three Physics undergraduate students (School of Science) achieved an impressive 3rd place out of 46 highly competitive teams in the 2025 international final of the PLANCKS competition, held at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Spain from May 1 to 5.

The HKUST team, who named themselves “Technician Association at Clear Water Bay”, represented Hong Kong in the international final, after excelling in the preliminary round of the competition held in Hong Kong in February. Approximately 200 students from 29 countries and regions took part in this year’s final event.

Organized annually by the International Association of Physics Students, the PLANCKS (Physics League Across Numerous Countries for Kick-ass Students) competition aims to promote excellence in theoretical physics and foster cross-cultural academic exchange. The event provides a unique platform for top physics students to engage in rigorous intellectual challenges while building connections across the global physics community.
