HKUST Engineering Announced Appointments of Two Associate Deans

The School of Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of two Associate Deans with retroactive effect from January 15, 2025.

Prof. George YUAN Jie – Associate Dean of Engineering (Strategic Planning and Development)

Prof. George Yuan’s Associate Deanship in Strategic Planning and Development supersedes his previous appointment as Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies), which he held since July 1, 2024. In his new position, Prof. Yuan will establish research platforms and executive education programs that emphasize opportunities and partnerships in the Mainland and internationally.

Prof. Yuan is a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE). He received his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006 and his BS degree in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2000. He joined HKUST as an assistant professor in the ECE Department in 2006. Over the years, he served in various administrative roles at the University. He was the Associate Head (Postgraduate Studies and Outreach) in the ECE Department from 2021 to 2024, Chair of the Senate Committee on Postgraduate Studies of HKUST from 2020 to 2024, and Chair of the Joint Committee Session on Postgraduate Studies, a joint consultative academic mechanism between HKUST and HKUST(GZ), from 2022 to 2024.

Prof. Yuan’s research interests lie in analog-to-digital converters, sensor interface integrated circuits, biomedical/environmental integrated sensors, IoT eccentric ultra-low-power telemetry/energy harvesting, wearable sensors, and CMOS imaging sensors.

Prof. Albert CHUNG Chi-Shing – Associate Dean of Engineering (Research and Graduate Studies)

With a strong and relevant background in the School of Engineering’s administration and AI medical imaging, Prof. Albert Chung will oversee research and graduate studies matters and coordinate local research opportunities and medical-related research activities in his new post.

Prof. Chung is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Director of the Center for Medical Imaging and Analysis. He obtained his BEng in Computer Engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 1995 and MPhil in Computer Science from HKUST in 1998. He gained his DPhil in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford in 2001 and subsequently joined HKUST as an Assistant Professor.

Over the years, he provided dedicated services in various capacities. These include the Director (2010-12) and Associate Director (2008-10) of the Computer Engineering Program, Undergraduate Programs Coordinator of the CSE Department (2015-16), and Undergraduate Hall Residence Master (2004-11 and 2013-19). He was the Associate Head of the CSE Department from July 2016 to August 2019 and Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies) from January 2020 to December 2021. He embarked on a brief departure to take up the role of Chair in Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom, from January 2022 to August 2023, before rejoining HKUST in the same month. His research expertise lies in medical image analysis, image processing, and computer vision.
