The Center for Global & Community Engagement (GCE) of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), in collaboration with CLP Power Hong Kong Limited and Community Living Rooms, recently organized a series of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities at Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Hung Hom Community Living Room and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals To Kwa Wan Community Living Room. Aiming to ignite curiosity for STEAM subjects among schoolchildren of the low-income families, the activities attracted around 60 young students in total on two days.

The activities featured a variety of hands-on experiences and interactive sessions, enabling the young students to explore different STEAM concepts. The HKUST STEAM Tutor Team – comprised of HKUST undergraduates in various disciplines – played a crucial role in facilitating these sessions, sharing their knowledge and passion for STEAM with the community.

Activity overview:

1. Climbing Robot Workshop (Nov 30, 2024)

Participants learned about robotics and engineering principles by building and programming their own climbing robots. This hands-on activity sparked creativity and problem-solving skills among the attendees.

2. STEAM Talk and Demonstration on Energy (Dec 21, 2024)

Prof. Tim WOO, Director of the Center for Global & Community Engagement, shared various forms of energy and their applications, followed by exciting demonstrations. Participants gained a deeper understanding of energy concepts and their importance in everyday life.

CHAN Jun, a member of STEAM Tutor Team from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, said, “This workshop was a very good experience for me as a university student, bringing us closer to the less privileged groups in the community. It is a rewarding opportunity to revisit the STEAM knowledge we have learned before and remodel it as a fun and engaging learning experience for children.”

With enthusiastic participation from community members, the workshops provided valuable learning experiences for both participants and HKUST students, while also fostering a caring culture in the community.
