Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) drives computation, energy, information, and communications technologies that are at the core of a vibrant, interconnected global economy. It is the innovation engine behind 5/6G wireless networks, robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), micro-displays for augmented/virtual reality, power systems for electric vehicles and data centers, and artificial intelligence running on integrated circuits fabricated on semiconductor chips, all of which have fundamentally impacted our society. By constantly adapting to an ever-changing world, electronic and computer engineers turn challenges into possibilities.

HKUST’s ECE has constantly been transforming the world and the way we interact with the world by expanding communication networks, inventing smarter devices, and developing sustainable technologies. Our general degree program in Electronic Engineering offers a comprehensive curriculum of electronic engineering principles and applications with a broad coverage of all areas in ECE.

In recent years, a worldwide boom in the microelectronic and integrated-circuit industries, which drive contemporary semiconductor-based hardware lying at the heart of modern technologies, has presented us with a timely opportunity to nurture future leaders in these burgeoning technical areas. Our brand-new Microelectronics and Integrated Circuits (MEIC) degree program, which will be welcoming the first cohort of students in 2025, offers educational experiences and co-curricular training opportunities specialized in microelectronics and integrated circuits. Through leveraging our world-class laboratories and unique central research facilities in Hong Kong, you will receive hands-on practical training in semiconductor fabrication, integrated circuit layout design, and device/circuit measurements. Furthermore, you will have opportunities to take part in internships with companies, which allow you to acquire solid practical working experience, sharpen your technical skills, and build valuable networks with professionals from the industry. I also encourage you to participate in research projects with our internationally recognized faculty members, who are academic leaders, inventors, and entrepreneurs dedicated to excellence in teaching and world-class cutting-edge research, so you can be exposed to a dynamic research culture and be better equipped for advanced studies and a professional career.

With the rigorous training of the MEIC program, you will be well-equipped to pursue a wide variety of careers in the fast-growing job market of microelectronics and integrated circuits, including device design, circuit and system engineering, product development, business management, as well as higher studies locally or overseas.

I invite you to explore HKUST’s ECE and MEIC programs as a platform to launch a rewarding career. Take advantage of our unique hands-on project opportunities to foster your passion for microelectronics, integrated circuits, or any other high-impact technical fields of ECE such as artificial intelligence and robotics. Tap into your creativity and find the inspiration you need at HKUST to grow the next big ideas that the world awaits!
