Prof. Hnin Y. Y. NYEIN, Assistant Professor of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE), has been honored as part of the inaugural batch of Asia Pacific Biomedical Engineering Consortium (APBEC) Young Scholars. On December 10, 2024, she delivered an invited presentation in Singapore at the 18th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering 2024 (ICBME 2024) and received the award from Prof. HSING I-Ming, President of APBEC and Professor of CBE, and Prof. LIM Chwee-Teck, chair of the ICBME conference.

The APBEC Young Scholar Award is a prestigious recognition established to honor and support exceptional early-career researchers of the APBEC member universities (HKUST, National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, University of Tokyo, Seoul National University, and National Taiwan University) who have made significant contributions to the field of biomedical engineering. Six Young Scholars, with one from each member university, were selected in the inaugural batch.

Prof. Nyein earned her bachelor’s degree and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and joined Stanford University as a postdoctoral fellow upon graduation. She is a recipient of MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 Asia Pacific 2021, and her research has been published in acclaimed scientific journals such as Nature, Nature Communications, and Science Advances. Prof. Nyein joined HKUST in 2022.

In addition to this honor, Prof. Nyein was recognized as a Sensors & Diagnostics Emerging Investigator 2023 by the Royal Society of Chemistry for significant contribution to sensors and medical diagnostics.

In recognition of the honor, Prof. Nyein contributed a critical review titled “Dermal-fluid-enabled detection platforms for non-invasive ambulatory monitoring” in the Sensors & Diagnostics Emerging Investigators themed collection. This review highlights important biomarkers in dermal fluids, i.e. sweat and interstitial fluid based on their clinical relevance. The article clearly outlines the challenges on the wearable molecular sensing technology development and provides an outlook on dermal fluids-based molecular sensors in critical health concerns and drug therapy for remote ambulatory monitoring.

Sensors & Diagnostics from the Royal Society of Chemistry presented this special collection of invited contributions from early career researchers who are making significant contributions to the sensors & diagnostic fields.
