A team of three Computer Engineering (CPEG) undergraduates won the Gold Award of ASMPT Technology Award 2024 with their final year project titled “Two-Wheeled Security Robot”. Another team comprising five Integrative Systems and Design (ISD) undergraduates was recognized with the Bronze Award for their final year project on “Facade Installation Robotic System (F.I.R.S): Modernizing Working at Heights”.

Supervised by Prof. SHI Ling of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, the CPEG team comprised HUANG Haolun, JIANG Yicheng, and Jason LAM Ka-Ming. With the goal of enhancing security operations in urban environments, they designed and developed a two-wheeled robot with dynamic control, navigation, obstacle avoidance, and interactive capabilities. The robot aims to overcome the limitations of traditional security measures and assist human guards in their tasks.

The ISD team, supervised by Prof. TSUI Chi-Ying, Dr. Jac LEUNG and Prof. XIANG Changying, comprised LUK Wang-Lok, SONG Chen, TSE Yui-Kai, WANG Shijie, and YU Mukai. They addressed the challenges associated with the installation of building-integrated photovoltaic panels on existing building facades, which often require workers to perform tasks at heights, leading to increased labor costs and potential occupational hazards. The objective of the project is to automate some of the installation process with robotics solutions, for example, a computer-vision integrated robot, a load-bearing module for carrying the panels, and mechanical structures for securing panel installation.

The ASMPT Technology Award, now in its ninth year, is an initiative of ASMPT Limited to promote technological innovation in Hong Kong by recognizing excellent final year projects in engineering and related fields from invited universities. This year, 11 outstanding projects were nominated by engineering or science schools/faculties from CityU, CUHK, HKBU, HKU, HKUST and PolyU to compete for gold, silver and bronze awards. Judging criteria of the projects and presentations include technical performance, project quality, creativity, originality, applicability and practicability. The project presentation and award ceremony was held on June 21, 2024.

Headquartered in Singapore, ASMPT is a leading global supplier of hardware and software solutions for the manufacture of semiconductors and electronics.
