Prof. Khaled B. LETAIEF, New Bright Professor of Engineering and Chair Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering, has been elected to the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) as a Foreign Fellow with effective from November 1, 2023.

Founded in 1987, INAE comprises India’s most distinguished engineers, engineer-scientists and technologists covering the entire spectrum of engineering disciplines. It functions as an apex body and promotes the practice of engineering and technology and the related sciences for their application to solving problems of national importance.

Election to INAE fellowship is by nomination only. Criteria include notable engineering achievements and novel contributions in design, production, research, innovation, intellectual property generation, project implementation, consultancy and technology development, as well as proven leadership in capacity development of an engineering field or an allied area leading to innovative applications of engineering for the betterment of society or environment.

The newly elected class includes 48 Fellows from India and five Foreign Fellows from the United States, Hong Kong, and South Korea. They will be joining INAE’s membership with the existing 920 Fellows and 98 Foreign Fellows this November.

Prof. Letaief is an internationally recognized leader in wireless communications and networks with research interests in AI and machine learning, mobile cloud and edge computing, tactile internet, and 6G systems. He received numerous prestigious awards and honors throughout his distinguished career. These include membership of the US National Academy of Engineering, Honorary Doctorate in Engineering by the University of Johannesburg in South Africa, Edwin Howard Armstrong Achievement Award of IEEE Communications Society, Tunisia’s national accolade for the Best Tunisian Researcher or Inventor Abroad, and Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, and Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences.

Prof. Letaief joined HKUST in 1993 and has served in many high-level administrative positions, including Dean of Engineering (2009-2015) and Head of Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (2003-2009) at HKUST, and Provost of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (2015-2018) in Qatar. Currently, he is Senior Advisor to the President.

He also took leadership roles in professional societies, such as President of the IEEE Communications Society (2018-2019), the world’s leading organization for communications professionals, and Founding Editor-in-Chief (2002-2006) of the well-regarded IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. He is currently serving as an elected member of the IEEE Board of Directors.
