Prof. KWOK Hoi-Sing, Electronic and Computer Engineering, has been elected a 2020 Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), a US non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging inventors in academia.

The NAI Fellows Program highlights academic inventors who have demonstrated a spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on the quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society. Election to NAI Fellow is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.

A total of 175 prolific academic innovators from 115 research universities and governmental and non-profit research institutes worldwide are elected to the 2020 fellow class. They collectively hold over 4,700 issued US patents. Among them are recipients of the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, American Academy of Arts & Sciences and Nobel Prize, as well as other honors and distinctions. They will be inducted at the 2021 Fellows Induction Ceremony at the NAI 10th Annual Meeting in June in Tampa, Florida.

Prof. Kwok studied with Prof. Nicolaas BLOEMBERGEN (Nobel Laureate, 1981) at Harvard University, where he received his PhD degree in Applied Physics in 1978. He joined the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at HKUST in 1992. An expert in display technologies and nanotechnologies, Prof. Kwok has published over 700 journal and conference papers, written three monographs and edited six conference proceedings. He holds more than 90 patents and is active in technology transfer. He is the Executive Director of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Displays and Optoelectronics Technologies.

Prof. Kwok is a Fellow of The Optical Society (OSA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Society for Information Display (SID), and Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES). He is also an elected member of the Asia Pacific Academy of Materials (APAM). He was awarded the prestigious 2019 Jan Rajchman Prize by SID.

NAI has inducted fellows into the organization since 2012. To date, it has 1,228 fellows worldwide representing more than 250 prestigious universities and governmental and non-profit research institutes.
