Prof Fugee Tsung, Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management, has been elected a 2017 Fellow of American Statistical Association (ASA). Only one-third of 1% of the ASA’s membership is bestowed the prestigious distinction of Fellow. Prof Tsung is among the few number of Fellows who are from outside US, and is the only one in Greater China and one of the two in Asia being elected this year. They will be officially recognized at an awards ceremony during the Joint Statistical Meetings in Baltimore, US in August.

The 2017 Fellow class is comprised of statisticians from academic, business, government and research organizations, hailing from US, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Mexico. They are recognized for their professional contributions, leadership and commitment to the field of statistical science. The honor acknowledges Prof Tsung’s exemplary leadership and innovations in the field of quality engineering and quality management, outstanding teaching and mentoring, as well as service to the profession.

Prof Tsung has been internationally recognized for his pioneering contribution to quality control research and education. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), Fellow of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), Academician of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ), among other honors. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Quality Technology, the flagship journal of ASQ and is consistently ranked as one of the most cited journals in the areas of industrial engineering, management science, and statistics. He also received major awards including the Best Paper Award for the IIE Transactions (two times, in 2004 and 2009) and Outstanding IIE Publication Award (2010).

The ASA has conferred the designation of Fellow since 1914. Selection criteria include research, teaching, mentoring, occupation, service to the ASA and the broader community, professional activities and accomplishments in other organizations.

The ASA is the world’s largest community of statisticians. Its members serve in industry, government and academia in more than 90 countries, advancing research and promoting sound statistical practice to inform public policy and improve human welfare.
