The School of Engineering is pleased to announce that Prof Ting Chuen Pong, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, has taken up the post of Director of the Center for Engineering Education Innovation (E²I), following the retirement of Prof Neil Mickleborough, Civil and Environmental Engineering, with effect from 1 January 2015. 

Prof Pong received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1984. In 1991, he joined the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, where he is currently a Professor in Computer Science and Engineering, and a Senior Advisor to the Executive Vice-President and Provost (Teaching Innovation and E-learning). He has served as Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs of the University from 2002 to 2010, as Associate Dean of Engineering from 1999 to 2002, and as Director of the Sino Software Research Institute at HKUST from 1995 to 2000. He served as Academic Research Advisor for the University Grants Committee from 2010 to 2012. Before joining HKUST, he was an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA.

In 2014, Prof Pong led the Hong Kong Virtual University project team to represent HKUST in the Wharton-QS Stars Awards 2014: Reimagine Education global competition and was selected as the Winner for the Natural Sciences Award and Runner-up for the Hybrid Learning Award. Prof Pong is a recipient of the HKUST Excellence in Teaching Innovation Award in 2001. Prof Pong's research interests include Multimedia Computing, E-learning, Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition. Prof Pong is a recipient of the Annual Pattern Recognition Society Award in 1990.

Under his leadership, the Center for Engineering Education Innovation has become a successful fusion engineering education research facility and a leading center in the design, delivery and evaluation of innovative learning experiences for engineering students, faculty, and staff.
