ECE UG Student Reaped Gold Prize Award at Capstone Design Fair in South Korea

Yuen Cheuk Ho, Ambi, currently an undergraduate student of the Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) department, reaped the Gold Prize Award at the international session of the Capstone Design Fair of Engineering Education Festa 2014, co-organized by the Ministry of Education, Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, and Korea Association for Innovative Engineering Education. Over 300 outstanding capstone design projects were exhibited in the Festa. 

Ambi spent a year to develop his award-winning project “Sally”, which is a cost-effective and exhaustive swarm robotics system. Sally performs basic collective functions, including aggregation, dispersion and pattern formation. Such functions enable Sally to provide assistance in rescues, entertainment and swarm behavior researches, which are definitely advantageous to human-beings. Imagine a fire accident site, Sally, a remote and sturdy system, is able to sense and detect living entities in hardly reachable areas. In this sense, it is able to increase the number of rescues and lower the level of hazards in different accidents or even disasters. 

Ambi has been a robotics lover since secondary school. He participated in various robotics competitions and paid much attention on football robots, which are small robots that are able perform tasks collectively.  In secondary six, Ambi built his first micro robot, namely “Sugar Cube”, which is actually the predecessor of Sally. At the time being, Ambi is planning to advance the functionalities and performance of Sally so that its usage could be much widely applied in rescuing, entertainment and researches.
