The School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has held its first professional development day for secondary school teachers, with the objective of providing teachers with insights into innovative technology. Over 70 science teachers from 6 secondary schools under the English Schools Foundation (ESF), Hong Kong’s largest international schools network, participated in this full-day event on HKUST campus.

The teachers were first welcomed by Provost Prof Wei Shyy, followed by a presentation on the School of Engineering by Dean Khaled Ben Letaief. Teachers were then divided into two groups - Physical Sciences and Life Sciences - to attend half-hour inspirational talks delivered by faculty members on topics like “The New Mobile Generation”, “Terahertz Imaging”, “Information Visualization” and “Drug Delivery Technology”, “Green Building” “Neuro Network Computing”, “Wind Energy” and “Hygiene Monitoring: Smart Coating”.

Teachers also experienced the University’s cutting-edge research environment by visiting some of the state-of-the-art research facilities, including Nanoelectronics Fabrication Facility, Wireless Communication Lab, Robotics Lab, Coastal Marine Lab, Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility and CLP Power Wind/Wave Tunnel Facility. A campus tour and a sharing by the School’s Student Ambassadors were also organized.

Prof Khaled Ben Letaief said, “By sharing the expertise of the faculty members and advancements in the field, we hope that the program will contribute to the teachers’ professional development and provide them insights in their teaching. I am happy to see this event marks the beginning of a long-term relationship between the two institutions.”
