ECE Students Triumphed in SAMSUNG Joint Universities Creative Technology Awards

The finale of the SAMSUNG Joint Universities Creative Technology Awards was held at Cyberport on 16 February 2009. Among the twelve finalist teams from 5 Universities, our students are honorable to have received 3 Top and 2 Excellency awards as follows:

Most Creative Award - “Embedded Cognitive Therapy in Digital Photo Frame” by LAU Ming Tak, LAU Ka Man and LAM Po Chu (ELEC Year 3 students);

Technical Competency Award - “The Possible Life” by YEUNG Chi Ho and YU Lap Fai (ECE and CSE MPhil students) and CHAN Yik Hei (ELEC Year 2 student);

Most Caring Award - “The Braille Printer” by LEE Kwan Pak Patrick, WOO Hoi Ki and CHAN Ning Ching (ELEC Year 2 students);

Excellency Award - “Embedded Cognitive Therapy in Digital Photo Frame”; 

Excellency Award - “The Braille Printer”.

This competition aims to encourage young people to be creative, inventive, and appreciating. The theme for 2008/09 is “Old Thing, New Inspiration”, where students had to transform old things into brand new inventions with a whole set of different functions that contribute as a social responsibility to the community. Students had to write proposals to explain their ideas, build prototypes, and present their work to the judges.

A total of 74 teams consisting of undergraduate and postgraduate students from 5 universities, namely, HKUST, HKU, CUHK, PolyU, and CityU, participated in this competition. 29 teams with a total of 108 students were from HKUST, of which 26 teams were from the ECE Department.

Students from all years of study were involved. Most of them were Engineering students, but some teams had members from Science and Business as well.
