HKUST Vice-President for Research and Development Prof. Tim CHENG Kwang-Ting was honored with a 2024 CCF Overseas Outstanding Contribution Award by China Computer Federation (CCF). Prof. Cheng is concurrently a Chair Professor jointly in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Director of AI Chip Center for Emerging Smart Systems (ACCESS), a research center under the Hong Kong government’s InnoHK initiative.

The CCF Overseas Outstanding Contribution Award is presented to individuals or organizations abroad (including those from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) who have made outstanding contributions to promote China’s computer industry in the fields of scientific research, academic communications, talent cultivation, and international cooperation. Only two recipients are named every year. The other recipient of this year is Prof. CHUA Tat-Seng from National University of Singapore.

The CCF Awarding Committee has cited Prof. Cheng as an outstanding scientist in the international field of electronic design automation (EDA), acknowledging his pioneering work in integrated circuit testing and design verification. His dedication to cultivating talent in China’s computer science field, through both course instruction and reciprocal academic exchanges, and his active participation in and organization of EDA conferences in China have resulted in significant advancements in industry-academia-research cooperation.

An internationally leading researcher with excellent experience in fostering cross-disciplinary research collaboration, Prof. Cheng is a world authority in the field of electronics testing and design verification, as well as an impactful contributor across a wide range of research areas including design automation of electronic and photonic systems, computer vision, and medical image analysis.

He joined HKUST as the Dean of Engineering in 2016 after more than two decades at the University of California, Santa Barbara in various leadership roles. He was appointed HKUST’s Vice-President for Research and Development in 2022. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES).
