In a two-year initiative, launched in 2019, HKUST and members of the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) conducted state-of-the-art cycling and resistance tests, as well as developed low-resistance suits, to enhance the performance of the Hong Kong cycling team at the Tokyo Olympics.
Under the leadership of Prof. Zhang Xin, Chair Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, the researchers applied technology adapted from Formula One racing cars and aerospace engineering to improve the cyclists’ competitive edge. The joint effort marked a major step forward in the integration of research and innovation into sport, demonstrating the impact of HKUST research.
HKUST has since extended its contribution through applying research advances and novel technologies to assist athletes in other sports areas.
