In 2015, the Ministry of Science and Technology approved the establishment of the Hong Kong Branch of the Chinese National Engineering Research Center for Control and Treatment of Heavy Metal Pollution at HKUST. The Center seeks to address the increasing demand nationally for clean water supplies through research on economic and sustainable alternative water resources, energy-saving sewage treatment schemes, and optimization of water systems.
