HKUST Robotics Team Shines in HSBC YDC Young Entrepreneur Challenge 2012 and JEC Outstanding Engineering Project Award

The  HKUST Robotics Team shines in two local business plan competitions. The project named “Robust”, which was developed by four students from the Robotics Team, won the 1st Runner-up and the HK Technopreneur Award in HSBC YDC Young Entrepreneur Challenge 2012. The project was designed to provide research and development service for the technology industries in electronics, mechanical designs and robotics area.

Out of more than 1300 participants from 317 teams taking part this year, the 4-student team is the only HKUST team which became one of the ten finalists and won two awards. With their outstanding business plan, the team will represent Hong Kong to compete with other six regional teams in the Asia- Pacific Region to strive for the Asia Technopreneur Award in August in Hong Kong.

Organized by the Young Entrepreneurs Development Council, the HSBC YDC Young Entrepreneur Challenge sets out to find and inspire the youth of today to excel at technological entrepreneurship through competition and learning. It is open to all students studying full-time in tertiary education institutes in Hong Kong. Each team's business plan was judged by the criteria of innovation and creativity, execution and practicality, market potential & growth and investor's return, and team dynamics and communication.

Apart from the HSBC YDC Young Entrepreneur Challenge 2012, the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) sub-team of the Robotics Team had its project “Modular Based Underwater Robotic System” achieved the 2nd Runner-up in JEC Outstanding Engineering Project Award (OPEA) 2012. The System was started to be built since February 2011. The purpose of the project is to investigate the possibilities in underwater robotics.

The ROV team was formed by students from different engineering disciplines. The team designed and built the ROV to complete different missions. They look forward to using the ROV for future missions, rendering their services and state-of-the-art ROV to potential clients.

Organized by the Jardine Engineering Corporation, the JEC Outstanding Engineering Project Award aims to encourage future engineers to develop new ideas and embrace innovation improvement of the engineering industry. It is open to all full-time undergraduates or postgraduates of local universities in any engineering disciplines. The project was selected based on vision and sustainability, conceptual design, commercial viability and communication skills.
