Prof Tianshou Zhao, Chair Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been selected as a Highly Cited Researcher 2014 by Thomson Reuters. Researchers earned the distinction by publishing the greatest numbers of highly cited papers, which are ranked among the top 1% most cited for their subject field and year of publication between 2002 and 2012.

The list contains some 3,200 researchers in 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences. Prof Zhao is among only 187 researchers worldwide to be included in the engineering field of the list.

The Highly Cited Researcher 2014 is a new list announced recently to identify influential and contemporary researchers who have contributed significantly to a number of the most highly cited publications in a given field. The new list is aligned with the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) process to identify the most highly cited research from the past decade. Highly Cited Researchers list the authors who have contributed to the greatest number of highly cited papers in the ESI categories of research. This list complements a previously published list first issued in 2001.

A total of 113,092 highly cited papers were covered in the 2014 list.
