Prof. YU Tongxi Elected Foreign Fellow of European Academy of Sciences
Prof. YU Tongxi, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and HKUST Honorary Fellow, was elected a Foreign Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc). This prestigious international honor reflects Prof. Yu’s scientific excellence, international recognition, and significant contributions to science and technology. The award will be presented at the 2026 EurASc Annual Symposium and Awards Ceremony, to be held on October 27-28 in Turin, Italy.

Biography of Prof. Yu Tongxi
Prof. Yu is an internationally renowned scholar in solid mechanics and impact dynamics. After graduating from Peking University, he worked in the manufacturing industry in China for 10 years in the 1970s. He received his PhD in 1983 and ScD in 1995, both from the University of Cambridge, UK. In between, he was a professor at Peking University and then at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), UK. After joining the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 1995, he took the roles of Chair Professor, Department Head, Associate Vice-President, and Founding Dean of Fok Ying Tung Graduate School. After his retirement, he served HKUST as Senior Advisor to President/Vice-President until 2023.
Prof. Yu’s research interests include structural impact dynamics, engineering plasticity and energy absorption. He has published more than 10 monographs and textbooks for postgraduate courses, as well as 450 journal papers, gathering more than 20,000 citations with an h-index of 70. He was involved in the core editorial work of the International Journal of Mechanical Sciences (IJMS) and International Journal of Impact Engineering (IJIE) for many years. He is a Fellow of ASME, IMechE, and HKIE, and an Overseas Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge.
Prof. Yu has had wide collaborations with universities in China and globally. He served as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Peking University, Beihang University, Zhejiang University, Ningbo University, Sun Yat-sen University, Dalian University of Technology, Wuhan University of Technology, and Southern University of Science and Technology, among others. He had conducted research projects with collaborators in the UK, France, Germany, Bulgaria, Singapore, Australia and the US.
