The School of Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted its inaugural Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award Ceremony on January 10, 2026, honoring three distinguished alumni for their outstanding achievements and contributions.

The newly established award is a flagship initiative of HKUST Engineering, recognizing alumni who exemplify excellence in engineering, leadership, and community service while making significant contributions to their industry, society, and alma mater.

Following a rigorous review by a panel of senior academic and industry leaders, the three award recipients are (listed in alphabetical order by last name):

At the ceremony, Prof. Tim CHENG, HKUST Vice-President for Research and Development and former Dean of Engineering, remarked, “We take immense pride in the University’s accomplishments over the past 35 years. These achievements stem not only from our faculty’s dedication, but also very importantly, from the profound contributions our alumni have made to society after graduation. Leveraging HKUST’s expertise in areas such as AI, robotics, materials, data science, energy, sustainability, and healthcare technology, we are pioneering next-generation medical advancements for our new medical school while supporting Hong Kong’s transition into a knowledge-based economy.”

Prof. Jimmy FUNG, HKUST Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning), added, “This award underscores the pivotal role our alumni have played in shaping the University’s legacy over the past 35 years and their far-reaching impact on society. We are proud to have witnessed their commendable achievements, including some who became prominent leaders and game-changers who have transformed and set new standards in their respective fields. We believe their achievements will continue to serve as a beacon of inspiration for our alumni community, current students and future generations.”

Prof. Hong K. LO, Dean of Engineering at HKUST said, “The Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award marks a major initiative of the School of Engineering to recognize the exceptional accomplishments of its alumni, which now exceeds 40,000 members worldwide. We are delighted to introduce this award designated to honor their contributions. Cultivating and strengthening alumni relations remains central to our mission, and we are confident that this award, alongside our engagement programs, will foster a vibrant community and inspire the next generation of engineers.”

The Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award Ceremony was part of HKUST Engineering Alumni Homecoming Day. The full-day event also featured an alumni reunion luncheon, campus tours, robot games and demonstrations, robotic barista, tastings of alumni-produced products, a display of Dr. Jensen Huang’s autographed leather jacket, and research showcases on AI-powered healthcare technologies and the low-altitude economy, and more. Over 1,000 engineering alumni, together with their families and friends, attended the Homecoming Day, reconnecting and reminiscing on the HKUST campus.
