Prof. XIE Yuan Awarded 2025 Overseas Outstanding Contribution Award by China Computer Federation

Prof. XIE Yuan, Fang Professor of Engineering and Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was honored with a 2025 CCF Overseas Outstanding Contribution Award by China Computer Federation (CCF). He is concurrently Director of the Jockey Club STEM Lab of Future Advanced Computing Technologies (FACT Lab) and the Institute of Integrated Circuits and Systems at HKUST.

The CCF Overseas Outstanding Contribution Award is presented to individuals or organizations abroad (including those from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) who have made outstanding contributions to promote China’s computer industry in the fields of scientific research, academic communications, talent cultivation, and international cooperation. Only two recipients are named every year. The other recipient of this year is Prof. Masaru KITSUREGAWA from the University of Tokyo.

The CCF Awarding Committee has cited Prof. Xie as a highly influential and internationally renowned expert in the fields of integrated circuit chip design, computer architecture, and electronic design automation. He is committed to translating research concepts into practical industrial applications, making notable contributions to the integration of the industry, academic and research sectors. He has nurtured numerous outstanding talents in the field of computer science through developing university curricula and establishing research centers in China.

Prof. Xie joined HKUST in 2023. He obtained his BS from Tsinghua University and MS and PhD from Princeton University. After his PhD studies, he developed his career in the United States and gained invaluable industry experience at IBM Microelectronics and AMD Research. He was a professor at the Pennsylvania State University and later the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also served as Distinguished Engineer and Chief Scientist at Alibaba’s DAMO Academy.

A Fellow of IEEE, ACM and AAAS, Prof. Xie has received numerous major accolades, including the US National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, IBM Faculty Award, Semiconductor Research Corporations (SRC) Inventor Recognition Award, IEEE Computer Society Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award, IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Industrial Pioneer Award, and many best paper awards at IEEE and ACM conferences. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame in the world’s premier computer architecture conferences (ISCA, MICRO and HPCA).
