It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Prof. Neil MICKLEBOROUGH, a distinguished founding member of the School of Engineering, in Tasmania, Australia. We extend our deepest condolences to Prof. Mickleborough’s family and friends.

Prof. Mickleborough was a leader in structural engineering and bridge design, a passionate educator and mentor, and a beloved figure of our community. He joined HKUST in 1992 as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and served as the Associate Dean of Engineering from 1995 to 1997, where he made invaluable contributions to establishing the School in its formative years. From 2012 to 2014, he was the Director of the Center for Engineering Education Innovation (E2I). Under his leadership, the center fostered a culture of excellence in teaching and assessment, driving engineering education at HKUST to the forefront of the region.

An outstanding researcher, Prof. Mickleborough’s work on the design of prestressed concrete has been widely recognized. His research provided practical solutions to complex engineering challenges, contributing to infrastructure projects across Asia and internationally.

His passion for teaching and mentorship inspired generations of students, many of whom credit their success to his guidance. His dedication to education was recognized with a Teaching Excellence Award from the School of Engineering. A mentor not only to students but also to faculty members, Prof. Mickleborough cultivated a supportive environment within the department.

To continue his spirit of nurturing young engineers, the Professor Neil Mickleborough Memorial Fund has been set up for recognizing students with outstanding peer mentorship. Donation to the fund will be matched by the School of Engineering and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering respectively.
