HKUST Robotics Team Earned Six Awards at 20th National University Students Intelligent Car Race in Shenzhen

The Intelligent Racing (IR) sub-team of the HKUST Robotics Team delivered a commendable performance at the 20th National University Students Intelligent Car Race, South China Division. The competition was held in the Harbin Institute of Technology in Shenzhen on July 22, 2025, and attracted over 1,000 teams in the South China region.

The Intelligent Racing sub-team was made up of 20 students who specialized in the areas of software, hardware, and mechanics respectively. They spent months designing and perfecting their smart cars for different challenges, such as photoelectric, micro-electromagnetic, and air cushion country crossing events. Through careful testing and combining advanced software, strong hardware, and innovative designs, they optimized their vehicles for the best performance. Their efforts paid off as they performed exceptionally well, earning a total of six awards:

  • Third Class Award in regular country crossing
  • Third Class Award in micro-electromagnetic
  • Two Merit Awards in air cushion country crossing
  • Merit Award in regular photoelectric
  • Merit Award in micro photoelectric


Organized by the Chinese Association of Automation, the National University Students Intelligent Car Race reached its 20th anniversary in 2025. Since it started in 2006 at Tsinghua University, the competition has promoted innovation and encouraged teamwork among participants. It has grown into a well-known global event, attracting tens of thousands of university students and creating a vibrant community of innovators. Many participants have gone on to become leaders in smart car technology and related fields.
