HKUST Research Teams Shine at Prestigious International Public Transport Conference
Research teams from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), led by Prof. Hong K. Lo, Dean of Engineering and Chair Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, have garnered significant acclaim at the 16th International Conference on Advanced Systems in Public Transport (CASPT), held at Kyoto University from June 30 to July 4, 2025.
As the premier global forum for public transportation research, CASPT highlights groundbreaking contributions to the theory and application of systems and methodologies that enhance public transport planning and operations. Since its inception in Chicago in 1975, the triennial conference has been held across five continents, fostering international collaboration and innovation. This year’s edition took place in Japan, attracting leading experts from around the world.
Among over 270 presentations and 400+ participants, HKUST stood out by securing two of the three prestigious Yuval Hadas Memorial Awards—a rare distinction in the field. These awards, presented every three years, recognize exceptional research impact and originality, as evaluated by a panel of global experts. Only two Best Paper Awards and one Young Researcher Award are granted each cycle.
HKUST’s award-winning papers include:
- Best Paper Award (Second Place): “Resilient Bus Services Design under Correlated Stochastic Metro System Disruption” by Su Zhiya, Enoch Lee, Hong K. Lo, and Joseph Y.J. Chow.
- Young Researcher Award: “Modeling Spatiotemporal Platform Passenger Flow: A Macroscopic Simulation-Based Optimization Approach” by Ma Qiru, Enoch Lee, Du Kejun, Hong K. Lo, and Ricky S.W. Lee.
These accolades underscore HKUST’s leadership in advancing public transport research and its commitment to developing innovative solutions for real-world challenges.
