A student team led by Prof. Jack CHENG, Associate Head and Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIVL), won the grand award in the Student Research Category of buildingSMART International (bSI) openBIM Awards 2024, which is the most globally recognized award in openBIM. They are cited for demonstrating exemplary use of openBIM in the built asset industry.

The team comprised Civil Engineering PhD students XU Yuqing, GONG Xingbo and WU Zhaoji, and PhD graduate Helen KWOK Hoi-Ling. Their winning entry is titled “CarbonSmart: Automated Knowledge Graph-based Carbon Assessment and Tracking throughout the Construction Life Cycle using openBIM, openGIS, and Blockchain”. The award was presented at the banquet of buildingSMART International Summit cum CIB W78 Conference held in Marrakech, Morocco in October 2024.

bSI received over 160 submissions from universities and organizations worldwide this year, shortlisting 22 finalists and awarding grand awards to nine teams in their respective categories. Hong Kong teams made a record-breaking achievement, with five finalists and three grand award winners (HKUST, Hip Hing Engineering Company Limited, and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government).
