Mechanical Engineering Team Crowned Champion in 12th IMechE Greater China Design Competition
A Mechanical Engineering student team from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was crowned champion in the 12th IMechE Greater China Design Competition, organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Hong Kong Branch on April 27-28, 2024.
Supervised by Dr. Stanley LEUNG and Prof. Robin MA of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), the winning team comprised MAE PhD students KWOK Kin-Nam and Nicole CHAN Cho-Sin, MAE MPhil student CHAN Kwun-Chung, MAE undergraduates CHAN Wai-Chung and ON Kin-Sum, as well as YAU King-Ying, a postgraduate from the Department of Physics.
Under the theme of this year – “Repeatable vehicle”, the competition challenged engineering students across the region to develop innovative concepts for a “repeating vehicle”. Teams from four tertiary institutions participated, namely HKUST, University of Hong Kong, South China University of Technology, and Guangzhou City University of Technology.
The HKUST team won the competition with a wood-based electric delivery vehicle capable of autonomously achieving precise transportation to the set targets. The judges were impressed by its innovative design, which integrated vehicle dynamics with a balanced mechanical structure to minimize complex electronic control and achieve the goal.
