Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies) and Civil & Environmental Engineering Professor WANG Yu-Hsing was named a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), becoming one of only 3% of the society’s members who hold this prestigious honor.

Founded in 1852, ASCE represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries. ASCE fellows are senior members of the society (at the member grade for at least 10 years) who have made celebrated contributions and developed creative solutions that change lives around the world.

Prof. Wang Yu-Hsing became Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies) in January 2022. He was Associate Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering between 2018 and 2021.

He is a professional geotechnical engineer in Taiwan as well as a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. His research interests lie in vertical AI on smart and resilient cities, innovative wave-based characterizations of geomaterials, and experimental geo-micromechanics and DEM simulations. He is the Director of the HKUST Data-Enabled Scalable Research Lab, a makerspace specialized in the applications of geotechnical internet of things, deep learning, and big data analytics on sustainable city development.

He received the ASTM International Hogentogler Award in 2005 and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Civil Engineering of his alma mater National Taiwan University in 2013. He is also a two-time awardee of the School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award in 2016-17 and 2008-09, respectively.

Prof. Wang is also active in local and international professional services. He has participated in different ASCE-related conferences, serving as an organizer/co-organizer, committee member, session chair, and paper reviewer. In addition, he has been invited for keynote and theme lectures at international conferences and served as an associate editor or editorial board member in various journals.

Prof. Wang obtained his BS and MS degrees from National Taiwan University, and PhD in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received the George F. Sowers Award for PhD students.
