Prof. WANG Yu-Hsing Appointed Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies)

The School of Engineering (SENG) is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. WANG Yu-Hsing, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIVL), to succeed Prof. Albert CHUNG as the new Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies), with effect from January 1, 2022. Prof. Wang will work along with Prof. MOW Wai-Ho, Professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering and another Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies), to oversee undergraduate matters in the School.

Prof. Wang obtained his BS and MS degrees from National Taiwan University, and PhD in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received the George F. Sowers Award for PhD students.

He joined the HKUST in 2001. Over the past two decades, he has provided dedicated service to the Department, the School, and the University in various capacities. He was the Associate Head of CIVL Department between 2018-2021, and has served as Residence Master of postgraduate halls and Jockey Club Hall. He has also been actively involved in committee service in the areas of undergraduate studies, postgraduate studies, research, and teaching & learning quality assurance, etc.

An expert in geotechnical engineering, Prof. Wang’s research interests lie in vertical AI on smart and resilient cities, innovative wave-based characterizations of geomaterials, and experimental geo-micromechanics and DEM simulations. He is the Director of the HKUST Data-Enabled Scalable Research Lab, a makerspace specialized in the applications of geotechnical internet of things, deep learning, and big data analytics on sustainable city development.

He was invited to be keynote and theme lecturer at international symposiums, and served as associate editor and editorial board member in various journals. He received the ASTM International Hogentogler Award in 2005 and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Civil Engineering of his alma mater National Taiwan University in 2013. He is also a two-time awardee of the School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award in 2016-17 and 2008-09, respectively.

The School would like to pay tribute and thank Prof. Albert Chung for his dedicated service and contributions as the Associate Dean of Engineering in the past two years. Under his leadership, the School has achieved important milestones in its undergraduate education, in particular the recent successful HKIE accreditation outcome and the flourishing outlook of its undergraduate recruitment despite the pandemic situation.
