The Robocon sub-team of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Robotics Team scooped the championship in the 2018 Robocon Hong Kong Contest, marking their ninth win since the competition was launched in 2004. Held at the Hong Kong Science Park on June 24, the regional contest attracted 12 teams from six local tertiary institutions to compete, showcase and learn from each other’s design. This year’s theme draws inspiration from the Vietnamese folk game of “Nem Con”, or “shuttlecock throwing”, requiring the robots to throw shuttlecocks through vertical rings and land on the golden cup to achieve “Rong Bay”, ending the game with a knockout victory.

Throughout the competition, teammates and alumni came together to show their support for the two HKUST teams, Fiery Dragon and War Dragon. To prepare for the contest, the two teams spent countless hours over the past six months in tireless testing, tuning, and redesigning of their robots to ensure an optimal balance of their speed and stability. Despite being young teams consisting of mostly Year 1 and Year 2 students, both teams have demonstrated dedication, commitment to excellence, as well as unlimited support for each other. All of the hard work culminated in the nail-biting final match, where HKUST’s Fiery Dragon edged out with a 53-second “Rong Bay” to claim the championship.

Following this victory, the team will go on to represent Hong Kong in the ABU Robocon 2018 on August 26 in Ninh Binh, Vietnam. They will be competing with the best of the best undergraduate robotics teams across the greater Asia-Pacific region.

Since its launch in 2002, ABU Robocon has been a premier stage for students in the region to display their ingenuity and skills in robotics and build lasting friendships after the competition.
