Appointment of Director of Industry Engagement and Internship

The School of Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof Michael Sung as Director of Industry Engagement and Internship (IEI). Prof Sung is succeeding Prof Patrick Yue.

Prof Sung received his PhD in EECS from MIT, where he was the principal investigator for MIT Media Lab’s Wearable Computing Group as an early wearable computing/IOT innovator in long-term continuous health monitoring technologies. Prof Sung is a high-tech entrepreneur and has lead successful commercialization efforts in IOT technologies, diamond/graphene material technologies, LED packaging technologies, thermal management materials, and CMP semiconductor processing technologies. Prof Sung serves on the board of several companies he has founded over the years.

In his new role as Director of the IEI, Prof Sung will be driving a proactive industry engagement agenda for HKUST Engineering to connect faculty and students to more collaborative partnerships with companies. Prof Sung will also be working to create more internship opportunities for students to develop practical industrial experience. He is also active in creating new business development and commercialization platforms to enhance faculty and student innovation, including the formation of a new manufacturing platform to allow the HKUST community to access the manufacturing and industrial supply chain ecosystem in the Pearl River Delta.

In addition, Prof Sung is involved with developing various entrepreneurial initiatives at HKUST in his dual-role as the Associate Director of the Entrepreneurship Center. He founded the student-driven Venture Entrepreneurship Network, an organization which provides various mentorship and entrepreneurship resources to the community.

As a successful practitioner of technology transfer/commercialization and IP strategy, Prof Sung sits on the board of directors for the International IP Commercialization Council for Hong Kong. Prof Sung is the author of over 10 patents & 50 conference/journal papers. He has received various awards for technology entrepreneurship including Jiangsu Province's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talented People first place award and MIT Enterprise Forum's Most Visionary Technology Award.
