The School of Engineering is pleased to announce the appointments of Prof Chi Ying Tsui, Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE), as Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies); and Prof King Lun Yeung, Professor of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBME), as Associate Dean of Engineering (Research and Graduate Studies), effective 1 July 2014.

Prof Tsui is succeeding Prof Roger Cheng, the current Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs); and Prof Yeung is succeeding Prof Christopher Chao, the current Associate Dean of Engineering (Research and Graduate Studies), upon their moves to new roles with the Office of the Executive Vice-President and Provost and the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering respectively.

Prof Tsui received his PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1994. He joined HKUST as Assistant Professor in the same year and rose through the ranks to Professor in 2011. He has extensive expertise in a broad range of areas including designing VLSI architectures for low power multimedia and wireless applications, developing power management circuits and techniques for embedded portable devices and ultra-low power systems. He has published more than 175 referred technical journal and conference papers. He also received a number of best paper awards and served as associate editor for several international journals as well as the general chair or on the organization committee of various international conferences. He currently holds ten US patents. He is the co-founder of Perception Digital Limited, a listed company in Hong Kong, and has been active in providing consultancy service in local and multinational companies. He has been much engaged in serving the ECE Department, where he has been the chair of the Undergraduate Student Affairs Committee and Staff-student Liaison Committee, and member of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee since 2009. He is also the Associate Head of the department now.

Prof Yeung joined HKUST as Assistant Professor in 1996, and rose through the ranks to Professor in 2010. He obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1993 from University of Notre Dame, where he spent his early academic career as post-doctoral fellow before joining HKUST. As an internationally recognized scholar in chemical engineering, Prof Yeung has made remarkable contributions in a wide range of areas including advanced materials, chemical reaction engineering, nanostructured materials, inorganic membranes, and microchemical systems. His work has been extensively cited by leading researchers in the field. In addition, Prof Yeung serves as editor or editorial board member of a number of prestigious journals, and member of international scientific committee of various flagship conferences. Prof Yeung is also an exemplary educator who received the Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award of the School for three times. He has been the Postgraduate Coordinator of the CBME Department and a member of the Engineering Postgraduate Studies Committee of the School since 2012.

The School would also like to pay tribute and thank Prof Roger Cheng and Prof Christopher Chao for their leadership, dedication, and outstanding contributions to the School as Associate Deans over the past years. Under their leadership, the School has been making remarkable advancements in areas of academic planning and administration, 334 curriculum development, implementation of School-based admission, internationalization and diversification of graduate education, and multidisciplinary research initiatives.
