The Smart Car team of the HKUST Robotics Team won the 3rd Class Award in the Camera Category of the 7th Freescale Smart Car Competition (South China Region) in Xiamen in July 2012. This is the first time HKUST students attempted in the Camera Category of the competition after receiving the 3rd Class Award in another category last year.

The team was formed by three undergraduate students, Yee Pui LAM, Ruixi LIN (both from Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering) and Cheuk Ho YUEN (from Computer Engineering Program). They have spent 7 months to design the program and build the car in order to achieve the best time to complete the 45-meter route of the game. The car needs to detect the route from its built-in camera and calculates the response action for moving forward. The team finally completed the route with a speed of 2.2m/s and earned the 3rd Class Award among 121 teams participating in the Camera Category in the South China Region.

The team's supervisor Prof Tim Woo, Director of Global and Community Engagement Program, said, 'This competition is one of the keenest competitions in China. With the enthusiasm and hard work of the team members, we are glad to receive the award twice in a row.'

Organized by the Ministry of Education, the Freescale Smart Car Competition (South China Region) attracted 348 teams from 78 universities and colleges to participate. HKUST was the only team from Hong Kong and Macau. The Smart Car Competition is an innovative competition which covers skills on automotive control, pattern recognition, sensor technology, electronics, electrical, computer, machinery, and many other disciplines.
