Prof Guang-hao Chen, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIVL) at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has recently been elected Fellow of International Water Association (IWA), the world’s largest organization for water professionals. The fellowship attests to the University’s research excellence in water science.

The IWA Fellows Program was launched in 2010 to recognize the professional excellence of its members. The fellowship is bestowed to those IWA members who, in the judgment of their peers, have made a distinguished contribution to the advancement or application of water science and technology, bringing the realization of significant value to society. In 2010, 34 fellows from 15 countries and regions were elected. Prof Chen is among the program’s second batch of fellows elected in 2011.

As an IWA Fellow, Prof Chen becomes a member of an elite group of global water professionals with international recognition and renown for their guidance and leadership in the world of water science, technology and management as it continues to evolve.

Prof Chen received his DEng degree in Environmental Engineering from Kyoto University in 1990. He is currently the Professor of the CIVL and Environmental Department and Director of the HKUST MSc Program in Environmental Engineering. His research interests include sustainable sewage treatment systems; sludge minimization in biotreatment; sewer process modeling; MBR process optimization; low-cost and compact wastewater treatment technology.
