Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance

QA@HKUST

The HKUST quality assurance framework enables and encourages our collective effort to improve the quality of the university educational programs. It sets out key principles that characterize international best practice and emphasizes the need for evaluation and evidence. Under the framework, all members of the University have a role to play in the collective work of quality assurance and enhancement. For more information about the quality assurance framework at HKUST, please visit  QA@HKUST

Engineering Education Quality Assurance Committee

To facilitate continuous improvement of our programs via outcome based education and to ensure quality of our engineering education, the School established the  Engineering Education Quality Assurance Committee (E2QAC)  in 2013. The Committee meets regularly in each semester to discuss and refine the implementation of quality assurance processes as detailed below:

  • advise and formulate policies and review current practices relating to quality assurance (QA) of teaching and learning in the School of Engineering;
  • ensure that the delivery of courses and program is implemented under the Outcome-based Education Framework; and
  • share good practices and make recommendations to Departments for promoting the quality of teaching and learning.

Enhancement of Teaching & Learning Quality

School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award
To recognize the outstanding teaching performance of engineering faculty, the School has established the School of Engineering Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award since 1994. The list of recipients of the award can be found  here.

Peer Assessment of Teaching Quality
The School of Engineering insures the quality of teaching through a system of peer review of teaching, which covers both peer observation of classroom teaching and peer evaluation on teaching performance outside class. This system complements the University's mandatory course evaluation system in giving an unbiased and objective evaluation on the teaching performance of faculty members. Departments are responsible for implementing the system of peer review of teaching under the guidelines adopted by the School. The School serves as an independent body monitoring the process of departmental peer reviews and its effectiveness in assuring the teaching quality of faculty members at both the departmental and school level. Details can be referred to the Guidelines for Peer Review of Teaching.

Professional Accreditation

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) would review the Bachelor of Engineering degree programs offered by the School during the professional accreditation visits. All programs which lead to a Bachelor of Engineering degree are accredited by the HKIE. Under the international Engineering agreements for the recognition of this professional and technologist qualification, the Engineering programs offered by the School are widely recognized around the world.
