HKUST Engineering Announced Two Leadership Appointments in Undergraduate Studies and Affairs

The School of Engineering is pleased to announce two leadership appointments in the area of undergraduate studies and affairs with effect from September 1, 2025.

Prof. Henry LAM Hei-Ning – Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies)

Prof. Henry Lam will succeed Prof. MOW Wai-Ho, who will step down on August 31, 2025. Prof. Lam will collaborate with Prof. WANG Yu-Hsing, also Associate Dean of Engineering (Undergraduate Studies), to oversee all undergraduate matters within the School.

Prof. Lam is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE). He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005 and joined HKUST as an assistant professor in 2008. He has served as the department’s Associate Head since 2017 and Director of the Center for Engineering Education Innovation (E2I) since 2023. In his roles in the department, which also included Acting Head (Dec 2016 – July 2017) and Undergraduate Programs Coordinator (2014-16 & 2017-18), he led the effort in designing and implementing the new 4-year curriculum (2012) and the new Bioengineering undergraduate program (2018). More recently as the E2I Director, he led a taskforce in the School to revamp its admissions system, culminating in the successful launch of the dual track admissions system in the 2025 admission cycle. Prof. Lam’s research interests lie in the fields of proteomics, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics.

Prof. Dan TSANG Chiu-Wa – Executive Director for Undergraduate Recruitment and Student Development

In this newly created role, Prof. Tsang will work closely with Prof. Henry Lam and Prof. Wang Yu-Hsing to provide dedicated leadership to strengthen and streamline the School’s undergraduate recruitment and student development initiatives.

Prof. Tsang is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of Research Center on Decarbonization Technology. He received his BEng in Civil and Structural Engineering and PhD in Civil Engineering at HKUST. He joined the faculty team of HKUST in August 2023 after a decade-long academic career at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he rose through the ranks from assistant professor to full professor. An academic with extensive networks and rich experience, he currently holds the position of Pao Yue-Kong Chair Professor in the State Key Laboratory of Clean Energy Utilization at Zhejiang University in China. Previously, he served various positions in renowned universities worldwide, including the University of Queensland (Australia), Ghent University (Belgium), Stanford University (USA), and Imperial College London (UK).

Prof. Tsang’s research aims to develop green technologies for long-term decarbonization and promote resource circularity and sustainable development. Prof. Tsang is the founding Editor-in-Chief of npj Materials Sustainability (Nature Portfolio) and Chairman of the Hong Kong Waste Management Association (2023-25). He was also the Chairman of Waste Management Subcommittee of the Advisory Council on the Environment of the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2023 and 2024.
