A project led by Prof. YANG Hai, Chair Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received funding in the Strategic Public Policy Research Funding Scheme (SPPRFS) 2024-25. Titled “Development Strategies for an Advanced Air Mobility Network in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area”, the project is collaborated with HKUST faculty members Prof. Jack CHENG from the same department and Prof. LYU Guodong from the Business School, Prof. JIA Shuai and Prof. SUN Xiaotong of HKUST(Guangzhou), and Prof. LIU Wei from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Prof. Yang’s project focuses on designing and evaluating advanced air mobility (AAM) infrastructure for unmanned aircraft. The HKUST low altitude economy sandbox, proposed by the University’s newly established Low Altitude Economy Research Center, will facilitate real-time testing of AAM concepts and aid in developing a 3D simulation framework to address operational challenges and promote AAM solutions in the region. The project will last for three years, from 2025 to 2027.

Administered by the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit, SPPRFS is a government-financed funding scheme dedicated to supporting evidence-based public policy research by higher education institutions and think tanks in Hong Kong.
