Prof. Gary CHAN Shueng-Han, Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was elected as a Sigma Xi Fellow in the 2023 cohort in recognition of his contributions to enterprises through scientific research. He is the first and only Sigma Xi Fellow outside the Americas since the inaugural cohort in 2020.

The induction ceremony was held in the second annual International Forum on Research Excellence (IFoRE) which took place in California in November 2023, with renowned keynote speakers including Nobel laureate Prof. Frances Arnold (Chemistry, 2018).

The Sigma Xi Fellow distinction is awarded on a competitive basis to members who have been recognized by their peers for exceptional contributions to Sigma Xi and the scientific enterprise. Self-nominations are not accepted. No more than 20 Fellows were selected in each of the four cohorts announced to date.

Prof. Chan’s research interests include smart IoT and sensing systems, location AI, video/user/data analytics, cloud and edge AI, technology transfer and IT entrepreneurship. He has been consistently ranked among the World’s Top 2% Scientists (published by Stanford University) every year since 2020. Through technology transfer and entrepreneurship, he has successfully deployed his research results in industry and co-founded several startups. Due to their commercial and societal impacts, his innovations have received numerous local and international awards, notably the Hong Kong Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service for “outstanding contribution to the fight against COVID-19” in 2020. Currently, Prof. Chan is also Affiliate Professor of Innovation, Policy and Entrepreneurship Thrust in HKUST(Guangzhou). He served as Director of HKUST Entrepreneurship Center in 2016-2020.

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society is the world’s largest multidisciplinary honor society for scientists and engineers. Founded in 1886, its mission is to enhance the health of the research enterprise, foster integrity in science and engineering, and promote the public understanding of science for the purpose of improving the human condition. More than 200 Nobel Prize winners have been members.
