Biography

Biography

Prof. Yuanyuan (Alvin) Zhou joined HKUST via the university’s “30 for 30” talent acquisition campaign. He obtained his B.S. degree from Xi’an Jiaotong University and his Ph.D. degree from Brown University. Prior to the HKUST appointment, he was a “Talent100” Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) during 2020-2023. He has authored/co-authored more than 100 papers and co-filed 8 US patents (3 issued). As a corresponding/first/co-first author, he published more than 40 papers in top-tier journals (IF>15), including 5 in the Nature series (Nature Energy and Nature Communications) and 11 in the Cell series (JouleChem, and Matter). His Google Scholar shows 10,000+ citations and 54 h-index. Dr. Zhou’s research program, centered on perovskite semiconductors, was exhibited in InnoTech 2023 as one of the only 25 selected innovation projects for celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the HKSAR Establishment. He has received prestigious honors and awards, including China’s NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong & Macau), HKBU Presidential Early-Career Researcher Award, HKBU Innovation Award, China Rising Star in Science & Technology (by China Association for Science & Technology), US National Science Foundation EPSCoR Research Fellow, Brown University Outstanding Engineering Thesis Award, Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Students Abroad. Dr. Zhou has been continuously named in the World’s Top 2% Scientists (Stanford University’s List) since the release of this prestigious list in 2019. He has recently been featured by the RSC Nanoscale Emerging Investigators and Wiley-VCH Advanced Materials Rising Stars. As an active member of the Materials Research Society (MRS), he has chaired/co-chaired the influential MRS perovskite-topic symposia 8 times. He is currently the Associate Editor of the Journal of Energy Chemistry (Elsevier; IF=13.1) and an Advisory Board Member of Device (Cell Press). Dr. Zhou coined the name of his research group “ΣLab”: Σ is an abbreviation of “semiconducting inorganic-based materials” (SIGMA), and it is also a mathematic representation of our group research philosophy “staring at the sum/whole”. Beyond the research, Dr. Zhou is dedicated to teaching and mentoring young professionals, as well as STEM outreach services. Discover more at the ΣLab website.
