I am the kind of girl who is curious about everything. I like to observe how people tackle their problems in an abnormal and innovative way, as I am a big fan of problem-solving. I once remember my roommate complaining charging up the air-conditioner every two days during summer is super annoying and expensive. Suddenly, an idea popped out in my mind; I suggested reconnecting the wires of the card value reader of the air-con, so we can create a wire shortage in the card reader, then we don’t need to charge up the air-con consistently, and we even don’t need to pay for it. Then I drew out the electric diagram to discuss with my roommate how we could successfully short the right wires (though it’s only a joke, and we didn’t attempt to do this). That was a bold and weird idea, right? Yeah, I am the kind of witty person who always has some interesting and creative thoughts popping out of my mind.
I am very grateful that HKUST has given me the chance to express my weird thoughts. I had to team up with other engineering school students in a case competition where we got to think about how we could help the start-ups in HKSTP to expand their business and increase their constitution rate in the market.
Also, as a computer major student, every time I write programs, I discover that there are infinite possible ways I can do for completing a task; I find it fascinating. I constantly find a way to improve my code, such as challenging myself by writing the same task with two different implementation methods or finding the simplest, cleanest, neatest way to perform my expected output. I am passionate about continuing my exploration of computer science as I can not only create minigames for myself to kill time when I am bored but also optimize algorithms that help others to solve their problem in the best way. I find it very meaningful to decide what my code is used for.
I also explored my uni-life by joining different student societies such as the Path Advisor team, where I am given a chance to learn how to apply what I have learnt in lectures and coached by my seniors (who are really warm and helpful!!!) and ESA where I was taught how to present myself in a more persuasive and approachable tone. The most valuable gain from ESA is that my fellow schoolmates have thrived in the area they are passionate about; they studied hard and even researched independently. Although they were such an outstanding person, they were so generous as to offer me or any other student a helping hand and give advice to me whenever I need. I am really inspired by them and would like to pass on the faith, the helping hand of ESA.
I felt that besides the academic aspect, I had grown holistically. Thanks to HKUST Engineering for giving me many chances to express and perform my wild and witty ideas and creating a better me.
