From ideas in mind to calculations on paper, and finally, to actual implementation in reality, engineers strive to improve our lives by creating things out of thin air. I deeply admire this productive profession. Plus, as a sci-fi fan, innovations from the legendary engineers in the stories always fascinate me. I even dream of being a researcher who realizes these imaginations. With this admiration and ambition, I started my journey of becoming a competent engineer at HKUST. Seeing the exponentially growing influence of information technology and computing, I chose Computer Science as my major.
Engineering is interesting. It allows me to appreciate how scientific knowledge, seemingly far from practical, can be applied to every aspect of our lives. I enjoy implementing abstract theories into lines of code and producing a working program that solves some real-world problems. That always gives me a great sense of accomplishment. Yet, the path of becoming a skilled Engineer is not easy. It takes days and nights of hard work to master the knowledge and skills. Luckily, the people at HKUST are supportive. My seniors and professors always lend me a helping hand whenever I struggle to understand the content.
Outside classes, I also participated in many fruitful experiences at HKUST, from which I acquired various soft skills and connected with like-minded people. One of those is the Engineering Student Ambassador program. I am glad to have the opportunity to share my experience through this platform, and I hope this will help people understand more and get interested in engineering.
