As my high school life edged closer to the end, I found myself in the predicament of having no clue about what to do for my tertiary education. While many students encountered this problem, I faced a unique situation where I am in a “choice paradox”. I had many potential choices, and I was in a dilemma to choose the one that suits me best. The question, however, was not about which major to choose. I have already decided to pursue engineering due to my strong interest in innovation and applied knowledge. Instead, I was unsure about which university I would like to enroll in and what engineering major I would like to specialize in. I was grateful to receive acceptance letters from several universities, but eventually, I chose HKUST, and I am pleased with my decision!
Growing up in Indonesia and Malaysia, I am lucky to be constantly surrounded by divinely beautiful nature ranging from pristine water, untouched forest, clean air, and majestic topography. However, it is also the place where you can find one of the most polluted places on earth. Apart from pollution, the world is facing one of the most alarming environmental threats: global warming.
The flexibility of HKUST course structure has helped me immensely as it allowed me to try out different engineering fields. Stemming from my keen interest in making the world a more sustainable place, it became a natural progression to choose Sustainable Energy Engineering (SUSEE) as my major. In HKUST, I am blessed to be able to make many meaningful connections with many faculty members and dynamic communities with unique backgrounds, be constantly engaged with insightful discussions, and be offered opportunities to be out of my comfort zones.
Looking back, the experience of studying at HKUST has been rewarding and one of the best decisions I have made. In the spirit of paying it forward, I hope that my experiences are able to inspire and be of help to others.
